Vera Rubin: The Astronomer Who Revealed the Universe's Hidden Matter

Vera Rubin (1928–2016) was an American astronomer whose observations profoundly transformed our understanding of the cosmos. Her work provided the first solid evidence for the existence of dark matter, an invisible substance that constitutes most of the universe's mass.

From childhood, she showed curiosity for the night sky and a constant interest in science. She graduated with a degree in astronomy from Vassar College in 1948 and later earned her doctorate from Georgetown University. According to Newton's laws of gravitation, peripheral regions should rotate much more slowly if the observed mass were only that of visible stars and gas. This discrepancy could only be explained if there was a substantial amount of invisible mass: dark matter.

The conclusions of Rubin and her collaborator Kent Ford not only revolutionized astrophysics but also established one of the great open questions in modern science: what exactly is dark matter? Her observations ushered in a new era in the study of the universe's structure and evolution, a central focus of current cosmology.

Throughout her life, Vera Rubin was an active advocate for women's participation in science. She received numerous awards, including the National Medal of Science (1993), and was a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Although the Nobel Prize did not recognize her discovery during her lifetime, her influence is undeniable: every investigation into dark matter implicitly bears the imprint of her work.

In recognition of her legacy, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory was officially named in her honor in 2020. Located on Cerro Pachón, in Chile, this observatory houses the Simonyi Survey Telescope, an 8.4-meter aperture instrument designed to carry out the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). This project will map the southern sky with unprecedented detail, allowing the study of dark matter, dark energy, and the evolution of the universe.
