Who is Maryam Mirzakhani?

Maryam Mirzakhani: the brilliant mind that forever changed modern geometry

Maryam Mirzakhani (1977–2017) was an Iranian mathematician and the first woman to receive the Fields Medal in 2014, the most prestigious award in mathematics and often compared to a "Nobel" in the discipline. Her research focused on the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces, transforming the understanding of complex geometries, Teichmüller theory, and the interaction between geometry, dynamics, and topology.

Born in Tehran, she excelled from a young age in mathematics competitions, being part of the Iranian Olympic teams and winning gold medals in the International Mathematical Olympiad in the mid-1990s. After studying at Sharif University of Technology, she completed her doctorate at Harvard University, where she worked under the supervision of Curtis McMullen. She later became a professor at Princeton and then joined Stanford University, where she continued to develop profound results on hyperbolic surfaces, flow dynamics, and geometric structures.

The 2014 Fields Medal recognized her "outstanding contributions to the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces," particularly her advances on Weil-Petersson volumes, counting of simple geodesics, and flow dynamics in Teichmüller spaces. Her highly abstract work has impacted various areas, from number theory to mathematical physics, and is considered a benchmark in modern geometry and dynamics.

In addition to her research, Mirzakhani was a highly appreciated professor at Stanford, where she combined mathematical rigor with a creative way of thinking; she often drew extensively on large sheets of paper while developing ideas, something her daughter described as "painting." She passed away in 2017, at the age of 40, due to breast cancer that had spread to other organs, but she left a lasting legacy as a role model for new generations of mathematicians and scientists worldwide.
